Have you ever wondered how much you could save or profit by improving your plant efficiency?

If you’ve dabbled in manufacturing, you’ve likely heard about Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). OEE is a crucial metric for assessing the efficiency of a manufacturing operation. However, calculating OEE can be complex. At True Logic Group, we’ve simplified this process with our SCADA Software called MARS.

Why OEE Matters

OEE is a composite metric that measures:

  • Rate of Quality Products: The proportion of good products produced.

  • Total Availability: The ratio of uptime to downtime.

  • Performance Efficiency: The speed at which machines operate compared to their maximum capability.

By optimizing OEE, you can lower costs and boost production, directly increasing your profits. But achieving this optimization requires accurate tracking and strategic improvements.

OEE Tracking

How do you Track OEE ?

To improve OEE, you need to identify areas of inefficiency. Traditional methods, like compiling data manually, are cumbersome and prone to error. This is where modern solutions, like MARS, come into play. MARS which is a SCADA software produced by True Logic Group Inc can automatically track and display production efficiency and equipment downtime in real-time, eliminating the need for manual data aggregation and rough calculations.

Even if you don't have a system like MARS as long as you have the data then you you can do the rest on your own with ease.

Using SCADA Data for OEE Calculation

Whether you have a SCADA system or not this can still apply to you as long as you have the necessary data. So, once you have gathered the necessary data, you can use it to calculate OEE. Here’s how you can proceed:

Availability Calculation:

  • Formula: Availability = (Operating Time / Planned Production Time) * 100

Performance Calculation:

  • Formula: Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Count) / Operating Time * 100

Quality Calculation:

  • Formula: Quality = (Good Count / Total Count) * 10

Overall OEE Calculation:

  • Formula: OEE = (Availability × Performance × Quality) / 10000

Practical Application

Using SCADA data for OEE calculation involves the following practical steps:

  1. Data Integration: Ensure that your SCADA system is integrated with your OEE calculation tools. Many modern SCADA systems offer APIs or built-in features to export data for analysis.

  2. Real-Time Monitoring: Leverage SCADA's real-time data collection to continuously monitor OEE metrics, allowing for immediate corrective actions if efficiency drops.

  3. Historical Analysis: Use historical data stored in SCADA systems to identify long-term trends and root causes of inefficiencies.

  4. Reporting: Generate reports and dashboards from SCADA data to visualize OEE metrics and communicate performance to stakeholders.

MARS : Helping with OEE & more !

Beyond OEE, enhancing your plant tracking and monitoring offers numerous additional benefits. These include improved reporting capabilities, access to real-time data, streamlined alarm and maintenance prevention, easier planning, and greater flexibility for future growth. A system that is capable of all those statements and more is MARS.
